Many area high schools deadlines are in December! I know that you want an awesome picture to be in your yearbook...the book that everyone will look at forever! Priceless Portraits

I want to say "thank you" to a couple of dads that I've recently had the pleasure to work with. They emphasized to me how priceless a portrait of their child was to them and I wanted to share the thought...

Quite often, we have a mom and their senior come in to order their finished portraits. Very rarely do dads get a say - except for a price limit.

We welcome dads in to help with the ordering process. It's a great family experience, mom & dad sharing thoughts on their favorite images and reflecting back on their child's life. Senior portraits are the last official portrait most people have taken and represents a right of passage. Let yourself get caught up in the beautiful piece of art that will hang in your home for years. It's OK to let yourself have a beautiful portrait of your child. You deserve it.

An Inspiration!

We had the opportunity to photography Amanda Clark, from River Valley High School this week. After spending some time getting to know her, I was so inspired by her. This young lady is going places. She battled cancer last year and even through her chemo treatments was able to maintain her high GPA, while doing her studies at home. She works hard and I'm sure that she will remain at the very top of her class. Amanda plans to attend Northern Michigan University and would like to do cancer research. Through it all, her great outlook on life just shines through her!

Thanks Amanda, for impacting my life and many others! I hope you enjoy your pictures!

Today we booked a couple of high school seniors who have already had pictures done by other "photographers". I put photographers in quotation marks because these days, just about everyone thinks they can be a professional photographer. Just because somebody has a pretty good eye and a camera with more technology than the space shuttle doesn't make them a professional photographer. Just as somebody with a really nice kitchen is not necessarily a gourmet chef. Sure they can probably make a nice meal or take a nice photograph, but every once in a while the occasion warrants a true professional.

We've noticed that these rookie photographers don't typically seek out people with weight problems or people who don't like to smile or who are generally just not comfortable in front of the camera. The professional deals with these issues everyday and is proficient at minimizing peoples flaws while enhancing their best features. Creating a portrait that will stand the test of time is not the same as snapping some candid pictures. Skills in lighting, composition, posing, color harmony and even psychology are all things that professional photographers spend years mastering.

Professional studios work hard to deliver the best, every time. We stand behind our product and service and have a burning desire to make our customers images that they are proud to own. Additionally most professional studios are assets to their community. We provide jobs, support schools, local events and a multitude of community activities while paying taxes and supporting other area businesses as well.

The Strachans

We just got done shooting one of our favorite families the Strachans. They decided on jeans and colorful shirts:) we love to see color. We did inside shots and a couple outside, and it worked out well with their schedules being able to do it on a Sunday. I'll make sure I post a shot or two after they come in and look at them.

Now is the time, what I mean by that is its time to schedule a family portrait session, or even just the kids. Inside shoots are so GREAT because we don't have to worry about weather. We have some cool spots inside the studio and we can make it painless. What a great gift for anyone to get. We have some spots left and you want to do this in time to get Christmas Cards out. Its so much more special to get a card with a picture, than just a regular Christmas Card. I always keep my picture cards in front of the regular ones:)

I just finished the order of Shannon VanPelt today:) It took them a while to decide which pictures to order from. Shannon, being the oldest of 4 was just the start of the senior pictures for the VanPelts. But now they know how it all works. The next 2 are twins in 8th grade and then a 10year old:) I know I've said this before but the more pictures that are taken the HARDER it is. Thats all I've got to say about that.

Well the senior portrait special is now in the hands of the class of 2011. But please choose your session carefully. It's something people don't think about to often but the more clothing changes and pictures taken the MORE YOU BUY. So if you have to stick to a strict budget, go with the Two Outfit session. It's perfect, two outfits in the studio and boom your done and you even order about 15 min. after the session, so you cut down on one trip to the studio. It's really a great session.

Today, I was, once again reminded of how very important photographs are! Sometimes lives can be cut short, then photographs of that person mean so much more to everyone.

If you've been thinking about doing a portrait - just call me and let's get it scheduled. I often hear "I'll do it after I lose 20 pounds" or "who would want a pictures of me?" and many other excuses - what if you don't get that chance? Your family and friends will love them; and photo's are gifts that are never returned... not like a bad tie or sweater!

Sometimes older people don't want to have pictures done of themselves, because they're old and don't look as good as they used to... but your kids and grandkids would love to have a lovely portrait of their parents/grandparents. What a great Christmas gift idea!

Don't you cherish those special old pictures of your great grandparents? I do! Those weren't just shots done on the cell phone; they were done in a portrait studio and took alot of effort and planning to get them. Let us create some fantastic portraits for you to pass down to your grandchildren! We can make it easy for you; but you need to take the first step to call or stop by.

Kids Welcome

Today, we had a really cool thing happen at the studio. A mom and her young son walked in and wondered if it was O.K. to go out into the yard and look at our vintage truck. It looked like "Mater" from the Disney movie Cars to him.

We welcome children of all ages and love to photograph them with something they love. Whether it's "Mater", Polly the Dolly, a pet, or even their parents, we love to capture childhood.

We had Lauren Strachan a senior at Penn High School come in today and order her pictures. Lauren had some really cool shots. This morning we photographed several lovely young ladies at Tiscornia Beach in St. Joe. It was a great morning for shooting. The wind was big enough to make some awesome waves for us, but not totally freak out the hair. It wasn't too hot, and it wasn't too cold, but the water was NICE! If you are looking for some amazing senior portraits and would like to get in on one of our Group Beach Shoots, we only have a couple appointments available FOR THE ENTIRE YEAR! Once the group days are booked up, we can always do a custom beach shoot for ya.

Happy Saturday! It's a beautiful, warm day out there! This morning, I was able to deliver pictures to Kathy Sankey of her son, Kyle. He was a unique and fun guy and the pictures showed it. I really enjoyed putting together her Crown Album. You can see the cover of it! These albums are original and very different. They chose the pictures and I put them together in many different layouts! Kathy said that we really captured her son and the different things that he's into.

I also am working on one for Nick Rossman, who ordered his pictures this week! He also has a great variety of pictures that I'll be using for his Crown Album. This is one of his favorite shots! He's a snowboarder and put on his gear in July just for these shots.

An Anniversary Surprise!!

A few months back, I was contacted about doing photographs of 3 sisters as a surprise for their parent's 25th Wedding Anniversary! OK, that's not so unusual BUT I know their parents and knew that I'd run into them and I couldn't blow the surprise.

So we scheduled the photo shoot between the time that Michelle moved back into the USA, after working out of the country; and Brittney left for studying abroad in Italy for 6 weeks. Luckily, Angela lives nearby and did a great job of ordering great portraits with the help of her husband.

Today, their mom, Kathie stopped in to thank us for doing such a beautiful portrait of her girls! It was such a surprise and made her cry! A priceless gift and will be cherished forever!

Beautiful Day

Sure was a beautiful day today, great day for outside pictures. Did a Quick Shoot today for Paul Champion from St Joseph's High School in South Bend, which means he had a quick 2 outfit session and got to see his images about 15 min. after the shoot and ordered too. Quick and Easy and only 1 trip. He said it wasn't bad either. I think he had a good time and is a really nice kid. Now he has his summer to do other things.

MODELS ON TOUR

Today we hit the road with some of our senior model team. Ended up in Holland. On the drive there the weather looked ominous, but by the time we got there it was almost sunny. We shot for a couple hours, then the rain rolled in. The models were excited! They love to play in the rain....so we kept shooting. Good times. Thanks so much to Colton, Erin, Heather, Emily, Jenna, and Shelby. You guys ROCK!

Congratulations Ben Bournay!!

Lake Michigan Catholic's second baseman Ben Bournay, was named first-team, all state honors in Division 4!!! Ben batted .472 with 39 runs scored and 42 runs batted in, helping his team reach the state finals last Saturday in their Division.

We are excited for him and his family, whom we've worked with for several years photographing his brother and sister and then recently, we were honored to be able to do their family portrait!

Great job, Ben! We're proud of you!

Wow what a weekend for alot of people. A storm came through on Friday nite and took trees and lots of power lines down:( Some never lost power some flickered and some are still out. We were gonna be open on Saturday but we had no power. We were lucky and power was on late Sat. nite, we do not have phones yet, so anyone trying to get in touch with us at the studio will have to wait until Wed. afternoon. We're sorry for any inconvenience.

World's Largest Flag Day Parade!!!

Three Oaks is home to the World's Largest Flag Day Parade! Join us this Sunday, June 13th at 3PM in downtown Three Oaks for the parade! It's been an annual parade since 1953 with a 100 parade units! Come and see those who have served our country, our elementary students carrying the 50 State Flags,our area Queens, bands, and more!

Today Cassi Bronson came in and ordered her pictures, what a nice girl and she had great pictures. She forgot she had her appointment today and was scheduled to work at Redamaks, so she had to call and change her shift, she's glad she did. About a week ago we took pictures of Gus Graham, a BEAUTIFUL Chocolate Lab. Gus's grandparents brought him in for his photo shoot, and he was such a good poser:) They wanted to have his picture taken for their son Cole. What a great thing to do for your grown children that are so hard to buy for. They had a hard time picking which one they were gonna get, but I helped them through it. The frame goes soooooo great with the colors in Gus.

On Wednesday, I have the privilege of assisting Kevin in the camera room while we photographed Ryan Fetters. We've been happy to have worked with his family in the past. We took their family portraits several years ago and his brother, Zach came in two years ago for his senior pictures. Ryan attends St Joseph High School where he plays soccer. He also plays the guitar and is a great kid!

Ryan has some awesome pictures! He seemed very comfortable in front of the camera, even though this isn't his thing. I can't wait for him to see them - but first he needs get his beach photo's taken next week!

Marcia Sherrill of Harrington Photography in beautiful downtown Three Oaks is officially a published photographer now! The new Harbor Country Guide came out yesterday, and one of her photographs made the cut! We're all very happy for her and proud of her. She is quite the photo buff and does a great job of taking some unique and interesting photographs of our lovely corner of the world. This photo is especially special to Marcia because she drinks a lot of wine. Just kidding, her father has farmed grapes all her life, and these grapes are the result of his labor. Great job Marcia! Wow! We're wrapping up our spring cleaning this week and will be ready to begin photographing the Class of '11 next week!! We're super excited to meet all of these new kids that have chosen us for their senior pictures, from so many area high schools. We're hoping for great weather so that we can take to the streets, alleys and other fun spots in Three Oaks.

We've just re-vamped the studio "magic" room. It's the room where everyone snuggles into the leather couch in front of a huge screen and is in awe of their images. They just can't seem to believe that they can look that good.

The reason we needed to change the room is all of the new products we're offering. From wall hangings and table top ideas to purses and bags...there's something new for everyones taste. We're so excited to create those special images and products that'll be treasured for a lifetime, we can hardly stand it.

Our New Bag Line

Yes we now have a NEW item we can put one or two of your beautiful Harrington Photography images on. Our new bags and purses:) (one of my weaknesses) We offer lots of different sizes and shapes, and can even get pillows. A couple weeks ago we participated in career day at Lakeshore middle school. The other day we got an envelope full of thank-you notes form a bunch of the students. Things like that can really make your day. I wanted to share a couple:

Dear Mr. Kevin Harrington,
First of all, thank you so much for coming to our school for our career day. Your session was my favorite! It was so much fun! I learned that you cannot be specialist on everything in photography. You can't give 110%. Also you told us that we shouldn't get married in July, instead we should get married in October. I also loved the way your pictures looked. Once again, your session was fun, I learned a lot and THANK YOU SO MUCH.

Dear Mr. Harrington and Team,
Thank you for coming and telling us about what you do. I am more interested in that field no than I was a couple weeks ago. You make it sound fun and exciting. Your class by far was the funnest. The pictures you showed us were so amazing that I want you to do my senior pictures and get a super-model sundae.

Dear Marcia, Missy, Cathy, Kevin,
Thank you so much for taking your time to visit Lakeshore Middle School today. I learned that in photography you need to master all of the skills so your photos can reach their true potential. I also learned that you have to please the customer. If you don't they probably won't come back. To get a lot of customers and get them to smile, you have to be very good with people. It was interesting to find out that all of your equipment has to be color balanced, or your picture will look very weird.

Wow! What a couple of fun days we've had here at the studio! We've just gotten in samples of some great, new products for Seniors, Kids, Families and Pets! Just finished up with Lindsay Ennesser and her mom Robin. Lindsay was one of our Senior Models from Dowagiac High School for 2010. It took them a while to get into the studio to order but it was much easier for them with our new schedule. Were open every other day now and since Robin is a Kindergarten teacher it was much easier for them to come in on a weekend:) They sure were fun to work with, and Robin picked out a great shot for her 16x20 (Black & White) and I helped them choose a really cool frame, can't wait to see it all finished.

The Blossomtime King and Queen pageant was held, and we are so happy for the new Miss Blossomtime, Kyra Heit from New Buffalo. She is such a nice gal and we've all enjoyed working with her. This warm spring day gets us thinking more and more about wanting to take senior pictures outside for the Class of '11. In only 6 weeks, we kick off our senior season! It's not too early to book your session for May. May is a great month to do your senior pictures. The grass is green, flowers are blooming, it's not too hot; and you gals, have probably already been tanning for prom.

As the days are getting nicer, I can't wait to do more more shoots outside. Three Oaks is such a great place to shoot. We have environmental, urban, a close beach and lots of unique places within minutes of the studio. Every spring brings us more and different ideas for outside. I can't wait to have our 2011 Senior season in full swing.

We got a taste of the great outdoors with an awesome senior from St. Joseph - South Bend a few days ago. Courtney even stood in snow with sandals on for us. What a trooper!

Today at the studio we were lucky to have Daisy Troup #30576 come and visit. They learned a little bit about photography and got a tour and show. A couple of the girls are in Kindergarten and the rest in 1st grade. Before leaving the studio they received their photography patches. A special thanks to Madison Tomlinson (front row 4th from the left) and her mom Kelly for getting the group together to learn a little about photography. The little boy in the picture is Madison's brother Josh, I think he had fun too:)

TRYING TO BE GREEN

Normally our blog posts is more about the studio and/or our customers. Today will be about that I guess , but mostly about all of us. The other day Cathy brought home a bag of Sun Chips from the grocery store. It seems our oldest daughter had a craving for them. The bag sounded so different, so loud, that it caught my attention more quickly than a bag of chips typically would (which is pretty fast). When I finally got the bag from her, there it was in bold letters; WORLDS FIRST 100% COMPOSTABLE CHIP BAG. Wow! How cool is that! It's made from 90% renewable, plant based materials and it breaks down completely into compost pile. I was so impressed! Good job Frito Lay! You guys rock! Now all companies need to follow your lead. Especially trash bag companies.

Here at the studio we try and do our part. We take everything we can to the recycling station once or twice a week. That adds up to a lot of stuff, especially cardboard, which our photos come packaged in. Since doing this, we've cut our trash output by over half. I know it's a small step, but if we all did that, it would be a huge start.

It's our planet, lets do our share.

Families are Special!

Hi, it's Marcia! We're enjoying a nice, warm spring day in Three Oaks; hope you're having a great day too!

Spring is a perfect time to have your Family Portrait done. Maybe it's been a few years since you've updated your family picture; or maybe you've never taken the time. We'd love to do that for you; maybe just your immediate family or we can plan for your extended family too. Nobody is ever too old or too young to be in a family portrait.

I've been after my family for YEARS, to let Kevin photograph us; someone always had an excuse. Well, finally last fall everyone got on board and we got it scheduled - then it rained and Nikki was sick. But great news! Nikki felt much better; but it still rained - and we took over the studio; did our individual pix, then squeezed in for one group shot. These will be cherished by me and my family FORVER!

What I'm trying to say is; don't put it off! Our lives can change so quickly and we each have a very special family. Take the time to capture these memories! You'll never regret it.

Our Senior Models Rock

I'm so looking forward to our upcoming Senior Season! We've been doing test-shoots of our 2011 Senior Models for a few weeks now and the enthusiasm and personalities are amazing. It seems like the Class of 2011 is gonna rock from every school.

We're not real big on lots of rules around here but one of of models today came up with a set of her own. I liked them so much, I have to share them. So here are Jenna's Studio rules:

1. Keep a 5 ft radius from Kevin. He's dangerous.

2. Maintain a 2 ft radius around Missy - sometimes 3.

3. Keep all parental units OUT of the camera room. Peeking parents will seldom be rewarded a support cookie.

4. If Missy says look at the light like a bug, don't freak. She means well, just try to look pretty.

5. Have fun!

Lakeshore Career Day

Today we went to Lakeshore Jr High for their Career day. Wow I am a very proud Lakeshore Graduate and loved being in the school again. It has changed a little in 30 years:) but the choir room where we held our sessions today were exactly the same. I even remember about where I sat in class. It was 7th and 8th graders and they were very cool kids, of course their Lakeshore students. We went over lots of business stuff with the kids, and we also showed them a slide show with lots of senior and family portraits oh and dog portraits too:} In charge of the day was Sue Dock and she brought in pictures of Jami and Jeff and their families, boy was that cool to see them again, thanks Sue. It was a very fun day

We've been busy photographing our high school senior models for the class of 2011. What a cool bunch of kids! They will have special offers to pass out around school, which will be a great way to save money on senior photo-shoots.

Harrington's Give Back!

We had the privilege of donating to a silent auction benefitting a customer of ours. Paul Lozmack was involved in an accident and broke his neck and will be wearing a halo for several months to recoup. Over the years, we've enjoyed having the opportunity of shooting their family portrait and photographing all 3 of their children's Senior Pictures. Our small community really came together and raised a lot of money to help the Lozmack family get through this difficult time.

We are anxious to find out who won the "Family Session" and our brand new "Dog Session" and work with either some brand new customers or possibly some that have already trusted us to do their portraits!?!!

We were happy to be able to do this!

The Dogs at Harbor Shores

Wow this is my first post on our Blog, and I'm finding it very fun:) This morning I framed the beautiful wall portrait of Helen Fasano and some of the dogs that board with her. Its on the Harbor Shores golf course, what a cool course. It was for her annual Christmas card. Anyway its a great shot with her and the dogs on 3 golf carts and of course one of our dogs got to be in the picture (Daisy)shes on the far right of the last cart. The frame she picked out was outstanding with that print. You can see that print at her place The Petz Carlton of Harbor Shores or at our Studio, we got one to match hers. Here at the studio we think Kevin is part dog so he works well with all dogs, and they sure do love him. I'll be talking more about dogs in the future. Well time to go.

Holy Schmoley have I ever been bad at keeping up with the blogging! I'll make no excuses. I've just been bad at it.

Anyway....We've been photographing a lot of cool seniors lately. Yesterday I had the pleasure to photograph Tyler Ganus from Buchanan. As you can see, Tyler plays football. He also wrestles and runs track. Besides that, he is a firefighter (brought in some cool gear for photos) and rides dirt bike.

It was great to see Tyler all grown up. When he was in 5th grade I taught his Junior Achievement class over at Moccasin Elementary School in Buchanan.
